At least 1.8 million registered voters won\u2019t be showing up to the polls this fall – because they\u2019re dead.<\/span><\/p>\n

The shocking finding emerged<\/span> in a report from the Pew Center on the States<\/a> that concluded a whopping 24 million – or one in eight – of the nation\u2019s active voter registrations have serious errors.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the 1.8 million dead on America\u2019s rolls of registered voters, the study, released Tuesday, also found that 2.75 million in the U.S. are registered as active voters in more than one state.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of these errors occur when voters move across state lines and their previous state of residence is not notified they have left.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The way the current system is set up doesn’t respond to the mobility of our society,\u201d John Lindback, Senior Officer for Election Initiatives at the Pew Center on the States, told the Daily News.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mistakes are costing taxpayers a pretty penny. Using Oregon as a case study, Pew found that the state spent more than $8.8 million on voter registration, or $4.11 per active voter registered, during the 2008 election. In contrast, Canada, which has adopted digital registration technologies, spends just 35 cents per voter nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pew suggests that one way to improve the voter-registration system is to go digital. Cross-checking voter databases against lists like motor vehicle registries, and allowing voters to register online would drive down errors in the nation\u2019s voter rolls, Pew concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pew also found that at least 51 million eligible voters — more than 24% of the total eligible voting population — aren’t registered to cast their ballots come November.<\/span><\/p>\n

93% of eligible Canadian voters, on the other hand, are registered. “It’s because they have this automatic registration system, taking existing databases and compiling lists of eligible voters based on the contact people have had with other government agencies,\u201d Lindback said. \u201cThey get a much more comprehensive list that way.”<\/span><\/p>\n
