{"id":10981,"date":"2012-02-19T20:16:45","date_gmt":"2012-02-20T01:16:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=10981"},"modified":"2012-02-19T20:16:45","modified_gmt":"2012-02-20T01:16:45","slug":"palestinian-prisoner-on-hunger-strike-poses-challenge-for-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2012\/02\/palestinian-prisoner-on-hunger-strike-poses-challenge-for-israel\/","title":{"rendered":"Palestinian prisoner on hunger strike poses challenge for Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ap120217122189.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10982\" title=\"AP120217122189\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ap120217122189.jpg?resize=490%2C346\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"346\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">JERUSALEM \u2014 A Palestinian prisoner who has refused food for two months to protest his detention without trial is in \u201cimmediate danger of death,\u201d according to his attorneys and a doctor from an Israeli medical rights group who examined him at the hospital in Israel where he is being treated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Khader Adnan, 33, accused by the Israeli authorities of being a prominent activist in the militant Islamic Jihad group, has been on a hunger strike since Dec. 18, a day after he was arrested at his home in the village of Arrabe, near the northern West Bank city of Jenin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The protracted hunger strike, said to be the longest by a Palestinian prisoner, has confronted Israeli authorities with a dilemma. If Adnan dies, it could trigger a response from Islamic Jihad and unrest in the West Bank, where there have already been demonstrations of support for the prisoner. Meeting his demand to be freed could set a precedent that Israeli security officials worry might inspire similar actions by other jailed Palestinians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The case has gone to Israel\u2019s Supreme Court and has drawn urgent expressions of concern from human rights groups in Israel and abroad, which have demanded that Adnan be released or charged and brought to trial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">On Friday, Catherine Ashton, the European Union\u2019s foreign policy chief, voiced \u201cgreat concern\u201d at the reports of Adnan\u2019s deteriorating condition and reiterated \u201cthe E.U.\u2019s long-standing concern about the extensive use by Israel of detention without formal charge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Israel says it uses detention with trial, or \u201cadministrative detention,\u201d as a preventive measure in cases in which a court proceeding could expose sources of intelligence. The prisoner is held on the basis of classified evidence that cannot be challenged by his or her attorney, for a period of up to six months that can be indefinitely renewed. Currently, 309 Palestinians are being held without charge, according to official figures cited by rights groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/khader-adnan-hunger-strike-in-israeli-prison-2.gif\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10984\" title=\"khader-adnan-hunger-strike-in-israeli-prison-2\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/khader-adnan-hunger-strike-in-israeli-prison-2.gif?resize=490%2C332\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"332\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Adnan, who has been jailed several times since 1999, was given a four-month administrative detention order on Jan. 8. His appeal against the order was rejected last week following a military court hearing at Ziv Medical Center, the hospital in the northern Israeli city of Safed where he is being treated under guard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">After Adnan was arrested, he began his hunger strike to protest what he said was abusive treatment under interrogation, and he continued the strike against his detention without charge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">A lawyer representing him, Jawad Boulus, said he had petitioned the Supreme Court on Wednesday for his release, but that no date had been set yet for a hearing. The petition includes a medical opinion from a doctor who examined Adnan on behalf of Physicians for Humans Rights-Israel, which concluded that the prisoner is \u201cin immediate danger of death.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cAn absolute hunger strike in excess of 50 days causes the decomposition of muscles .\u2009.\u2009. and the creation of toxins in the body,\u201d the opinion said. \u201cDeath may occur suddenly due to heart failure, or as the result of infection following the collapse of the immune system. .\u2009.\u2009.
