{"id":11185,"date":"2012-03-02T09:40:58","date_gmt":"2012-03-02T14:40:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=11185"},"modified":"2026-04-22T09:38:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T14:38:16","slug":"montana-judge-admits-sending-racist-email-about-obama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2012\/03\/montana-judge-admits-sending-racist-email-about-obama\/","title":{"rendered":"Montana judge admits sending racist email about Obama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/lat-cebull-mug.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11186\" title=\"lat-cebull-mug\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/lat-cebull-mug.jpeg?resize=300%2C337\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Judge Richard Cebull says he doesn&#8217;t like the president, but he doesn&#8217;t consider himself a racist.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Reporting from Seattle\u2014 Montana\u2019s chief federal judge Wednesday admitted forwarding an email to friends about President Obama that appears to equate African Americans with dogs and raises questions about the president\u2019s mixed racial ancestry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cNormally I don\u2019t send or forward a lot of these, but even by my standards, it was a bit touching. I want all of my friends to feel what I felt when I read this. Hope it touches your heart like it did mine,\u201d Chief U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull wrote before forwarding the email, a copy of which was obtained by the Los Angeles Times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The email was sent from the judge\u2019s court email account and immediately ignited a firestorm in Montana, where there were calls on social media sites for his resignation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cWe really feel that by circulating an email like this it really flies in the face of maintaining the honor and dignity of the position,\u201d Travis McAdam, executive director of the Montana Human Rights Network, said in an interview. He said the organization had not yet decided on an official response to the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Cebull, who has been Montana\u2019s chief federal judge in Billings since 2008, was appointed to the bench by former President George W. Bush and took his seat in 2001. He is a graduate of the University of Montana School of Law and a former tribal court judge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The Great Falls Tribune, which initially obtained the email and interviewed Cebull about it, said the judge conceded the content was racist but insisted he had forwarded it to six \u201cold buddies\u201d and acquaintances because he doesn\u2019t like Obama. He said he doesn\u2019t consider himself a racist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cIt was not intended by me in any way to become public,\u201d Cebull told the Tribune. \u201cI apologize to anybody who is offended by it, and I can obviously understand why people would be offended.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In the email, a boy asks his mother why he is black and she is white. \u201cHis mother replied, &#8216;Don\u2019t even go there Barack! From what I can remember about that party, you\u2019re lucky you don\u2019t bark!&#8217; &#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cThe only reason I can explain to you is I am not a fan of our president, but this goes beyond not being a fan,\u201d Cebull told the Tribune. \u201cI didn\u2019t send it as a racist, although that\u2019s what it is. I sent it out because it\u2019s anti-Obama.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">McAdam said the state\u2019s code of judicial conduct, which applies to state court judges, not federal jurists, requires them to behave impartially both in and out of the courtroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cSomebody of that stature, a federal judge, if they want to express their dissatisfaction with the president, you would assume they would do it about policy and issues, not circulating an email that is racist and vulgar in content,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The Tribune said it received the email after it had been forwarded several times in a chain that began at its original recipients.
