Hence, the U.S. Army is funding development of a Terminator-style robot soldier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Boston Dynamics has released new video of its<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-17938_105-10384522-1.html\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Petman<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">robot and its resemblance to the T-800 is uncanny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The vid below shows the anthropomorphic bot (aka the Protection Ensemble Test Mannequin) walking on a treadmill, doing squats, and pumping out push-ups without breaking a sweat. All it needs is a metal skull head and a phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The maker of the notorious<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-17938_105-20110208-1\/laugh-while-you-can-at-this-bigdog-robot-video\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">BigDog<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">and<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-17938_105-20112919-1\/run-here-comes-bigdogs-bigger-brother\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">AlphaDog<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">quadruped bots says Petman is just &#8220;an anthropomorphic robot for testing chemical protection clothing used by the U.S. Army.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The droid, scheduled for delivery next year, is supposed to go through various maneuvers wearing a suit and taking heavy doses of chemical warfare agents. Roughly 6 feet tall, it will also mimic human physiology, generating heat and sweating for added realism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Petman is designed to improve on previous machines that tested chemical weapons suits and is billed as &#8220;the first anthropomorphic robot that moves dynamically like a real person.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">It&#8217;s not the first machine with that advertising. Petman seems like Honda&#8217;s<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Honda_P_series\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">P series<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">prototypes of the 1990s that preceded the development of<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/honda-thinks-up-mind-controlled-robots\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Asimo<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">. Honda&#8217;s mechatronic mascot, however, was designed to help out in a human environment, not a military lab, and thus has hands and AI capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Petman may be used in applications other than suit-testing, according to Boston Dynamics President Marc Raibert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&#8220;There are all sorts of things robots like Petman could be used for,&#8221; Raibert was quoted as saying by IEEE Spectrum. &#8220;Any place that has been designed for human access, mobility, or manipulation skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&#8220;Places like the<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-11386_3-20078546-76\/dismantling-fukushima-reactors-will-take-decades\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Fukushima reactors<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">could be accessed by Petman-like robots (or AlphaDogs), without requiring any human exposure to hazardous materials.
