George Zimmerman<\/strong>, 28, the man charged with second degree murder in the February 26 shooting death of unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin<\/strong>, has consistently stated through family and legal council that he returned to his car after being directed to do so by the 911 operator.<\/span><\/p>\n

A court affidavit read during Zimmerman\u2019s first court appearance states the obvious:<\/span><\/p>\n

George Zimmerman confronted Trayvon Martin on the night that he was murdered.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> Orlando Sentinel<\/span><\/a><\/span> reports:<\/span><\/p>\n

The four-page [probable cause] affidavit [offers] a few new pieces of information. It says, that \u201cZimmerman confronted Martin,\u201d an apparent contradiction of Zimmerman\u2019s version of the events.<\/span>
\n It also says Trayvon\u2019s mother identified the screams for help heard in a 911 call as those of her son. It also reveals that investigators interviewed a \u201cfriend\u201d of Trayvon\u2019s who talked to him on the phone in the leadup to the shooting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on the description, it appears the friend was the girl described by Martin family attorneys as his girlfriend.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDuring this time, Martin was on the phone with a friend and described to her what was happening,\u201d the affidavit said. \u201cThe witness advised that Martin was scared because he was being followed through the complex by an unknown male and didn\u2019t know why.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Martin tried to run home, the affidavit says, but was followed by Zimmerman. \u201cZimmerman got out of his vehicle and followed Martin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The affidavit goes on to say that \u201cZimmerman disregarded the police dispatcher\u201d who told him to stop, and \u201ccontinued to follow Martin who was trying to return to his home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Zimmerman, the affidavit says, \u201cconfronted Martin and a struggle ensued.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

An affidavit is a written statement confirmed by oath or affirmation, for use as evidence in court.<\/span><\/p>\n

George Zimmerman appeared in court with his wrists in shackles, wearing a gray jumpsuit. He lives in a 2-inmate, 67 square feet jail cell at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility<\/strong> (JEPCF) on a no-bond status and is currently in protective custody \u2014 segregated from the general population. His attorney, Mark O\u2019Mara<\/strong>, will not seek a bond hearing, preferring Zimmerman to remain \u201cprotected\u201d until the \u201cfervor\u201d dies down around his client, who he claims is \u201ctired and frightened\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n

He is concerned about getting a fair trial and a fair presentation. He is a client who has a lot of hatred focused on him. I\u2019m hoping the hatred settles down \u2026 he has the right to his own safety and the case being tried before a judge and jury.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to ABC News, law enforcement sources told them that he also \u201cwept quite a bit\u201d his first night in jail. O\u2019Mara says that his client may at some point apologize to Trayvon\u2019s family but that it would not take place in the media and he was also not sure when that would occur:<\/span><\/p>\n

Understand that George fully well realizes that he was involved in some way in the death of another young man,\u201d lawyer Mark O\u2019Mara told ABC News. \u201cHe does not take the result of that altercation lightly at all. That weighed on him, I would imagine, more than the isolation, more than the last six weeks, more probably than the threat of what is to come in the system.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Zimmerman\u2019s next court appearance is scheduled for May 29. His trial has been assigned to Circuit Court Judge Jessica Recksiedler<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n
