{"id":12060,"date":"2012-04-25T16:23:05","date_gmt":"2012-04-25T20:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=12060"},"modified":"2012-04-25T16:23:05","modified_gmt":"2012-04-25T20:23:05","slug":"romney-urged-mothers-on-welfare-need-to-go-to-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2012\/04\/romney-urged-mothers-on-welfare-need-to-go-to-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Romney urged mothers on welfare &#8220;need to go to work&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/mitt-romney-5.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12061\" title=\"Mitt Romney 5\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/mitt-romney-5.jpg?resize=365%2C385\" alt=\"\" width=\"365\" height=\"385\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Mitt Romney last week declared his belief that \u201call moms are working moms,\u201d but he insisted as recently as January that women on welfare need to get jobs, even if they have young children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Romney defended his wife, Ann, a stay-at-home mother, on Friday after Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen said earlier in the week that Ann Romney is unqualified to speak for women\u2019s economic concerns because she \u201chas actually never worked a day in her life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Romney, himself, has said the \u201call moms are working moms\u201d argument does not apply to mothers who accept welfare assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cEven if you have a child two years of age, you need to go to work,\u201d Romney said at a Jan. 4 campaign stop in Manchester, N.H., describing his position as Massachusetts governor. \u201cAnd people said, \u2018Well that\u2019s heartless,\u2019 and I said \u2018No, no, I\u2019m willing to spend more giving daycare to allow those parents to go back to work. It\u2019ll cost the state more providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Romney\u2019s comment came in response to a question about welfare dependence and personal responsibility, and his campaign pointed out similarities between it and a statement Democratic former President Bill Clinton made in 1996, when he signed welfare reform legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cThis act honors my basic principles of real welfare reform. It requires work of welfare recipients, limits the time they can stay on welfare, and provides child care and health care to help them make the move from welfare to work,\u201d Clinton said at the time. \u201cIt demands personal responsibility, and puts in place tough child support enforcement measures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Romney said in New Hampshire that he favors unemployment accounts for workers \u201cwhere, basically, during their career, they\u2019re putting money into an unemployment insurance account, and if they become unemployed, they can take money out. And they can use it for education, job training.
