DAKAR. Africans say they have little hope that Europe will ever become civilized, after a week in which Spain\u2019s King Carlos went on an elephant-killing spree and the Swedish Culture Minister was entertained by a racially offensive cake. \u201cYou can take the European out of the jungle, but you can\u2019t take the jungle out of the European,\u201d sighed one resident of Kinshasa.<\/span><\/p>\n

August Mwanasa, of Libreville in Gabon, said the latest atrocities didn\u2019t surprise him as Europeans were still \u201csavages\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to sound racist, and some of my best friend are white, but let\u2019s be honest: violence is hard-wired into their DNA,\u201d said Mwanasa. \u201cI mean, Europeans killed over 20 million other Europeans in the 1930s and 1940s. That\u2019s barbarism on a scale unprecedented in history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jenkins Odumbe, a Nairobi milliner, bemoaned ingrained attitudes of entitlement in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf they\u2019re not going on the dole they\u2019re asking for bail-outs,\u201d he said. \u201cWhy can\u2019t they just get up earlier and work harder, that\u2019s what I want to know?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Liberte Aidoo, a Ghanaian travel agent, said she had been \u201cshocked and disgusted\u201d by what she found on her first trip to Spain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe brochures promise sea and sun, but they\u2019re still incredibly backward in Spain,\u201d she recalled. \u201cBasically they all live in mud huts called haciendas, and they sleep for two hours in the middle of the day. In Europe they call it a \u2018siesta\u2019. In Ghana we call it \u2018being fucking lazy\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But, she added, this kind of \u201cdepressing inertia\u201d was to be expected in a country with more debt than most of Africa combined.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, most Africans have dismissed calls for Swedish Culture Minister Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth to resign following the debacle in which she was photographed eating a cake designed to look like a racist caricature of an African woman.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe only people calling for her to resign are European liberals hiding behind a thin veneer of civilization,\u201d explained Burundian sociologist, Descarte Tugiramahoro. \u201cWe Africans are not shocked in the slightest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAll she\u2019s doing is engaging in two ancient European rituals: giggling at people who look different, and symbolic cannibalism, as introduced by the Catholic Church. It\u2019s all completely normal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
