Three out-of-state anti-NATO protesters accused of making Molotov cocktails and planning a violent attack during the international leaders\u2019 summit have been kept in isolation in the Cook County Jail, a lawyer for one of the men Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey have been kept in isolation without reading or writing material,\u201d Michael Deutsch told Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. at a hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later, Deutsch told reporters the isolation has caused \u201csevere psychological damage\u201d to the three men \u2014 Brian Church, Jared Chase and Brent Vincent Betterly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re being kept in a hospital white cell, totally in isolation from everyone else in the jail and each other 24 hours a day,\u201d said Deutsch, who is Church\u2019s attorney: \u201cIt\u2019s a kind of sensory deprivation situation for them. This is way to break someone\u2019s spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you start to call people terrorists, then you really change how they\u2019re treated by the jail because [jail officials are] concerned someone is going to attack them because they\u2019re terrorists or they\u2019re going to attack somebody else,\u201d Deutsch said. \u201cYou\u2019re stigmatizing them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A spokesman for Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said that, as is common in high-profile cases, the three men have been placed in 13-by-10-foot observation cells for 48 hours at Cermak Hospital, where well-being checks are conducted every 15 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s done for their safety and the safety of the officers and the detainees,\u201d sheriff\u2019s spokesman Frank Bilecki said, adding that the cell\u2019s have windows providing natural lighting<\/span><\/p>\n

The three men \u2014 whose supporters have dubbed them the \u201cNATO 3\u201d \u2014 were to be placed in the jail\u2019s general population later Tuesday and will be granted protective custody if they request it, Bilecki said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Church, 22, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Chase, 27, of Keene, N.H., and Betterly, 24 of Oakland Park, Fla., appeared before Bourgeois in beige jail garb.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lawyers Tom Durkin and Joshua Herman filed their court appearances as Chase\u2019s attorneys. Defense attorneys Molly Armour, Lillian McCartin, Paul Brayman said they\u2019d be representing Betterly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Afterward, the lawyers proclaimed their clients\u2019 innocence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf these people are terrorists, everyone can sleep well tonight,\u201d Durkin said. \u201cThey did not come here to cause violence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The men are accused of plotting to attack President Barack Obama\u2019s campaign headquarters and Mayor Rahm Emanuel\u2019s home and to firebomb police stations and squad cars, declaring, that after the NATO Summit, \u201cthe city will never be the same,\u201d according to police and prosecutors.<\/span><\/p>\n
