(AP\/File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>By Dylan Stableford<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The U.S. military is expanding its intelligence-gathering operations across Africa,<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/us-expands-secret-intelligence-operations-in-africa\/2012\/06\/13\/gJQAHyvAbV_story.html\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">the Washington Post reports<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">mainly using small, unarmed planes &#8220;equipped with hidden sensors that can record full-motion video, track infrared heat patterns, and vacuum up radio and cellphone signals&#8221;\u2014part of a &#8220;shadow war&#8221; against al-Qaida and other militants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Approximately a dozen secret U.S. air bases have been established there in the last five years, according to the paper, which &#8220;pieced together descriptions of the surveillance network by examining references to it in unclassified military reports, U.S. government contracting documents and diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy group.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">One of them is in &#8220;Ouagadougou (WAH-gah-DOO-goo), the flat, sunbaked capital of Burkina Faso.&#8221; But the planes often &#8220;refuel on isolated airstrips favored by African bush pilots, extending their effective flight range by thousands of miles.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The spy program is overseen by U.S. Special Operations but relies on help from private military contractors and African troops, the Post said. And while it&#8217;s not technically part of the White House&#8217;s controversial drone program\u2014which<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/blogs\/lookout\/al-libi-al-qaida-no-2-target-u-163347720.html;_ylt=AtIVmUF3SgOSBP9c9X2ulz2ZCMZ_;_ylu=X3oDMTFkZWgzYnZwBG1pdANCbG9nIEJvZHkEcG9zAzIEc2VjA01lZGlhQmxvZ0JvZHlBc3NlbWJseQ--;_ylg=X3oDMTMzNWdjaDY4BGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaWQDNTNkZWFmNjctN2ZhNC0zZTI5LWE5ODEtNDk4NzVkNTRkODFkBHBzdGNhdANibG9nc3x0aGVsb29rb3V0BHB0A3N0b3J5cGFnZQ--;_ylv=3\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">killed Abu Yahya al-Libi, al-Qaida&#8217;s No. 2, in a drone strike in Pakistan earlier this month<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u2014the U.S. military does use a few unmanned spy planes there, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t have remotely piloted aircraft in many places other than East Africa, but we could,&#8221; a senior U.S. military official told the paper. &#8220;If there was a need to do so and those assets were available, I&#8217;m certain we could get the access and the overflight [permission] that is necessary to do that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Most, though, &#8220;take off the old-fashioned way\u2014with pilots in the cockpit.&#8221; Why not drones?
