US financial and military support for the increasingly authoritarian Maliki government has continued despite rights abuses<\/span><\/h3>\n

Iraq<\/span> executed 21 people<\/span><\/a><\/span> convicted of terrorism charges on Tuesday, including three women, according to an Iraqi spokesman for the Justice Ministry.<\/span><\/p>\n

The appalling number of state executions in a single day is just one illustration of the wreck the United States left in Iraq after more than 8 years of invasion, military occupation, and nation building.<\/span><\/p>\n

The news comes as just finished delivering to the Iraqi government the last<\/span> 140 tanks<\/span><\/a><\/span> promised as part of a military-to-military support and training program, which followed<\/span> a batch of F-16 fighter<\/span> jets.<\/span><\/a> The Baghdad government, headed by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, has become<\/span> increasingly authoritarian<\/span><\/a><\/span> while continuing to receive<\/span> extraordinary support<\/span><\/a><\/span> from Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amnesty International in June<\/span> condemned<\/span><\/a><\/span> the Iraqi state\u2019s penchant for the death penalty, calling it \u201calarming.\u201d About 200 more executions are planned for the near future.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Ayad Allawi, the secular Shi\u2019ite leader of the opposition Iraqiya bloc in parliament, Maliki\u2019s security forces have<\/span> detained and brutally tortured more than 1,000 political opponents<\/span><\/a><\/span> in secret prisons and denied them access to legal counsel.<\/span><\/p>\n

US support for dictatorship and human rights abuses in Iraq is expected to continue, aimed at increasing Washington\u2019s influence in the Middle East, following a fiasco war that inadvertently provided Iran with a new Shiite ally in neighboring Iraq.<\/span><\/p>\n
