{"id":14945,"date":"2012-10-18T14:48:09","date_gmt":"2012-10-18T18:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=14945"},"modified":"2012-10-18T14:48:09","modified_gmt":"2012-10-18T18:48:09","slug":"us-begins-talks-to-extend-troop-presence-in-afghanistan-beyond-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2012\/10\/us-begins-talks-to-extend-troop-presence-in-afghanistan-beyond-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"US Begins Talks to Extend Troop Presence in Afghanistan Beyond 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/troops-landing.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14946\" title=\"Troops-landing\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/troops-landing.jpeg?resize=490%2C326\" height=\"326\" width=\"490\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Reports say Washington is vying for an agreement with Kabul that would keep tens of thousands of troops there until 2024<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>by John Glaser<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The US<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thecable.foreignpolicy.com\/posts\/2012\/10\/16\/state_department_official_negotiations_to_extend_us_troop_presence_in_afghanistan_s\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">has begun negotiations<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">with the Kabul government over the extension of troop presence past 2014, despite repeated claims by the Obama administration that the war in Afghanistan will come to an end that year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Vice President Joe Biden, during last week\u2019s debate with VP candidate Paul Ryan, told tens of millions of Americans, yet again, that the US is leaving Afghanistan in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cWe are leaving in 2014, period, and in the process, we\u2019re going to be saving over the next 10 years another $800 billion,\u201d Biden said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been in this war for over a decade. The primary objective is almost completed. Now all we\u2019re doing is putting the Kabul government in a position to be able to maintain their own security. It\u2019s their responsibility, not America\u2019s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">But US and Afghan negotiators met in Kabul last week to talk about the formal security agreement that will govern the presence of US troops past 2014. And more such meetings are already set to take place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">This has been a long time coming. Reports have been coming out for almost a year saying that Washington has been working on a deal with Kabul to keep US troops in Afghanistan<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/11\/15\/karzais-council-to-approve-of-us-presence-through-2024\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">at least until 2024,<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">a full decade beyond the withdrawal date the Obama administration has been touting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">NATO on Monday also<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/defcon-hill\/policy-and-strategy\/262055-nato-outlines-afghan-postwar-plan-\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">announced<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">it will also keep international troops in Afghanistan past 2014 alongside US troops, supposedly in training and advisory roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The Wall Street Journal<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/professional.wsj.com\/article\/SB10000872396390444024204578046523793100086.html?mg=reno64-wsj\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">reported<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">last week that \u201cWestern officials have mentioned the residual American force as ranging from a few thousand to some 20,000.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cIn addition,\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cfr.org\/zenko\/2012\/10\/12\/foreign-policy-puzzles-of-the-vice-presidential-debate\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">writes<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">Micah Zenko, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, \u201csome US policymakers assume that Afghanistan will serve as hub for special operations raids and drone strikes into Pakistan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The complete and utter failure of the US and its NATO allies to get anything constructive done in Afghanistan for the past 11 years should be testament enough that another 11 years won\u2019t do any good either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The stated mission of the US in the war in Afghanistan has been to eliminate the Taliban and al-Qaeda and prevent their return by building up a stable Afghan government and independent security forces. Every one of these goals have been objective failures, and experts and commentators across the political spectrum acknowledge this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The fact that the insurgency in Afghanistan is as strong as ever, even after 11 years of facing off against the world\u2019s most advanced military, is an indication that it will remain alive and well so long as there are any occupation forces on the ground and so long as the Kabul government is propped up by hostile foreign governments.
