{"id":15432,"date":"2012-11-24T09:57:46","date_gmt":"2012-11-24T14:57:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=15432"},"modified":"2012-11-24T09:57:46","modified_gmt":"2012-11-24T14:57:46","slug":"wal-mart-dismisses-labor-protests-at-its-stores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2012\/11\/wal-mart-dismisses-labor-protests-at-its-stores\/","title":{"rendered":"Wal-Mart Plays Down Labor Protests at Its Stores"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/chi-walmart-black-friday-protests-20121123-001.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15433\" title=\"chi-walmart-black-friday-protests-20121123-001\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/chi-walmart-black-friday-protests-20121123-001.jpg?resize=490%2C276\" height=\"276\" width=\"490\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a title=\"More information about Wal-Mart Stores Inc\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/business\/companies\/wal_mart_stores_inc\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Wal-Mart<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0faced not only a throng of shoppers on\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a title=\"More articles about Black Friday.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/subjects\/r\/retail_stores_and_trade\/black_friday\/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Black Friday<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0but what a union-backed group said was the biggest wave of protests that the retailer had ever seen, a contention the company disputed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The group, OUR Walmart, said there were protests at 1,000 stores in 46 states, ranging from a couple of community supporters\u2019 asking to talk with store managers about raising wages to raucous demonstrations in the Los Angeles, New York and Washington areas that each attracted hundreds of people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In Quincy, Mass., two dozen workers and their supporters demonstrated during the night, projecting a message on the store\u2019s outside walls that read, \u201cMassachusetts Supports Walmart Workers Rights.\u201d More than 1,000 people \u2014 employees, community supporters and members of the clergy \u2014 rallied outside the Walmart in Paramount, Calif.; nine were arrested after blocking a nearby street.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">OUR Walmart \u2014 its formal name is Organization United for Respect at Walmart \u2014 claims several thousand store employees as members and said hundreds of them did not report to work Friday in what the group said was a strike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cIn its 50-year history, Wal-Mart has never seen strikes like those we\u2019re seeing today,\u201d said Lynsey Kryzwick, a spokeswoman for OUR Walmart, which works closely with the\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a title=\"More articles about United Food and Commercial Workers Union\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/u\/united_food_and_commercial_workers_union\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">United Food and Commercial Workers<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0International Union. \u201cIt will be hard for Wal-Mart to ignore all these workers and their allies calling for change at Wal-Mart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Wal-Mart sought to play down the protests, saying they were largely a made-for-TV event and had hardly affected the company on what it said was its best Black Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cThe number of protests being reported by the U.F.C.W. are grossly exaggerated,\u201d said David Tovar, a Wal-Mart spokesman. \u201cWe are aware of a few dozen protests at our stores today.\u201d OUR Walmart said that in Massachusetts alone there were protests at four dozen Walmarts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The retailer said that some demonstrators had been bused from one store to another. Mr. Tovar said that the protesters represented a fraction of the company\u2019s 1.4 million United States employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Last week, Wal-Mart asked the\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a title=\"More articles about National Labor Relations Board\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/n\/national_labor_relations_board\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">National Labor Relations Board<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Times article on Wal-Mart\u2019s request.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/19\/business\/wal-mart-files-with-nlrb-to-block-union-backed-protests.html?ref=nationallaborrelationsboard\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">for an injunction<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0against the protests, which have occurred sporadically for weeks. Wal-Mart said they violated a federal law that bars unions from picketing for more than 30 days when seeking union recognition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Nancy Cleeland, the spokeswoman for the labor board, said on Friday that it was not ready to issue an announcement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">OUR Walmart said the protests were aimed at fighting retaliation and not at gaining union recognition. The group filed\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a title=\"Times article about the complaint.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/21\/business\/wal-mart-workers-file-complaint-with-us-labor-board.html?ref=nationallaborrelationsboard\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">its own complaint<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0with the labor board, saying that Wal-Mart had violated federal laws against intimidating workers who seek to strike or otherwise protest by saying there could be consequences \u2014 in the form of dismissals, demotions or reduction in work hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cA lot of people are fearful of retaliation,\u201d said Colby Harris, a three-year Walmart employee in Lancaster, Tex. \u201cA lot of allies have come and spoken up and that\u2019s given the workers a lot of confidence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Mr. Tovar said the company did not retaliate and was always ready to hear employees\u2019 concerns. He added, \u201cThe large majority of protesters aren\u2019t even Walmart workers.\u201d He said the number of employees who missed their scheduled shifts on Friday was 60 percent lower than Black Friday last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The company said it was providing employees who worked their scheduled Black Friday shift a special 10 percent discount off Walmart purchases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Dan Schlademan, one of the protests\u2019 main organizers and the director of Making Change at Walmart, an arm of the food and commercial workers union, said it was hard to determine how many protests there were nationwide.
