A state of emergency has been declared throughout the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><em>&#8220;French forces brought their support this afternoon to Malian army units to fight against terrorist elements,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0French President Francois Hollande said in a statement.<em>\u00a0&#8220;This operation will last as long as is necessary.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Britain supports France&#8217;s decision to intervene, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said in a message on Twitter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Earlier Friday, Hollande vowed to stop the advance of al-Qaeda linked rebels who control northern Mali and have headed south in recent days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In a speech to France&#8217;s diplomatic corps, the leader said he was ready to respond to Mali&#8217;s call for help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">France<em>\u00a0&#8220;is prepared to stop the terrorist offensive,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0Hollande said. He did not provide any specific details.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">It comes just one day after Hollande&#8217;s Malian counterpart, Dioncounda Traore, sought help from France in order to stem the rebels&#8217; advance. The two leaders will meet in Paris on Wednesday, a French diplomatic source told Reuters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The UN Security Council has also called for a &#8216;swift deployment&#8217; of foreign troops to Mali. It has approved plans to send some 3,000 African troops to recapture the country&#8217;s north.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Nigeria and Senegal are also providing assistance to Malian government forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Until now, France and other EU nations have limited their plans for assistance, offering only training and logistics to support Mali&#8217;s army.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Meanwhile, France&#8217;s Foreign Ministry has issued a travel alert for Mali, advising its residents to leave the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16184\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16184\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/hold-banners-urging-end.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16184\" alt=\"Women hold banners urging national talks to end the political paralysis in the south of Mali, in the capital Bamako January 10, 2013. (Reuters\/Francois Rihouay)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><em>&#8220;Due to the serious deterioration in the security situation in Mali, the threat of attack or abduction is growing,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0the ministry said.\u00a0<em>&#8220;It is strongly recommended that people avoid unnecessarily exposing themselves to risks.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Extremists, which have controlled the country&#8217;s north for months, captured the city of Konna on Thursday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><em>&#8220;We are actually in Konna for the jihad [holy war],&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0spokesman for the Ansar Dine militant group, Sanda Abu Mohammed, told AFP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Ansar Dine and Mujao have controlled most of northern Mali since last April.
