But the committee\u2019s report was quickly rejected by the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child reported that it was \u201calarmed\u201d by reports that hundreds of children died as a result of the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan because of a \u201creported lack of precautionary measures and indiscriminate use of force,\u201d the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2013\/feb\/08\/world\/la-fg-afghan-children-20130209\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>\u00a0reported over the weekend<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">. The UN report also condemned the arrest and detention of children in Afghanistan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">But the U.S. military said \u201cthe reports were unsubstantiated and cited figures from the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan showing that the vast majority of civilian deaths and injuries in Afghanistan over the last several years were caused by insurgents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In response to the UN report,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2013\/02\/05\/us-act-protect-children-conflict\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Human Rights Watch called on the U.S<\/span><\/a><\/span>. <span style=\"color:#000000;\">to \u201cpromptly carry out the recommendations of a United Nations committee of experts to improve protection of children abroad from armed conflict.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cThe US can and should do more to protect children affected by armed conflict,\u201d Jo Becker, children\u2019s rights advocacy director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In response to the UN report, the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2013\/feb\/08\/world\/la-fg-afghan-children-20130209\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">American Civil Liberties Union&#8217;s\u00a0Jamil Dakwar said<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">that &#8220;the U.S. must also honor its international law obligations to thoroughly and independently investigate civilian deaths and abuses against children, hold perpetrators accountable and compensate victims.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The UN report bolsters what Secretary General Ban Ki Moon had said last year. The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2013\/feb\/08\/world\/la-fg-afghan-children-20130209\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><em>LA Times<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">: \u201cIn April, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that 110 children were killed and 68 were injured in 2011 in airstrikes conducted by pro-government forces, led by the United States, which furnishes air power for the Afghan government.
