{"id":16946,"date":"2013-03-21T06:42:58","date_gmt":"2013-03-21T10:42:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=16946"},"modified":"2013-03-21T06:42:58","modified_gmt":"2013-03-21T10:42:58","slug":"huge-drop-in-workers-at-city-sized-us-embassy-in-baghdad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2013\/03\/huge-drop-in-workers-at-city-sized-us-embassy-in-baghdad\/","title":{"rendered":"Huge Drop in Workers at City-Sized US Embassy in Baghdad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/iraq1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16947\" alt=\"iraq1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/iraq1.jpg?resize=351%2C377\" width=\"351\" height=\"377\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color:#000000\"><strong>Cost-Cutting to See 10,000 Withdraw This Year<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">by Jason Ditz<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">A Vatican-sized fortress along the Tigris River, the US Embassy to Iraq is the stuff of legends,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/09\/16\/us-to-expand-massive-iraq-embassy-even-more\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">a $730 million testament<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">to the runaway overspending of the occupation era.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Ten years after the US invasion and four years after the embassy actually opened, the 16,000 personnel that were supposed to be deployed there more or less forever are shrinking fast,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/us-diplomatic-presence-iraq-shrinking-fast-174726074--politics.html\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">with 10,500 there<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">The number is going to drop a lot more, according to Ambassador Beecroft, who says that the goal is to<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/the_americas\/massive-american-embassy-in-baghdad-cutting-staff-sharply-decade-after-war-in-iraq-began\/2013\/03\/20\/b9e61fd0-9186-11e2-9173-7f87cda73b49_print.html\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">get down to 5,500 employees<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">by year\u2019s end, and with cost-cutting at a premium the number will drop even more next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">The ambition for the \u201cpost-war\u201d era appears to have dramatically exceeded the reality, with the US State Department envisioning a huge private army still fighting the war for them and huge public works projects in the coming decades. The money just isn\u2019t there, and neither is the appetite to put that sort of effort into Iraq after years of waste.
