But the cost<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/03\/14\/iraq-war-anniversary-idUSL1N0C5FBN20130314\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">could grow to more than $6 trillion<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">over the next four decades when interest payments are included, according to study released on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The study comes from the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/costsofwar.org\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Costs of War Project<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">by the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University. It not only estimates the staggering financial costs, but the human costs as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The low-end estimate for Iraqi civilians killed is about 134,000, although the Watson Institute says the war may have contributed to as many as four times that number.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The much-cited, peer-reviewed<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/brusselstribunal.org\/pdf\/lancet111006.pdf\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Lancet study<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">found in 2006 that about 650,000 Iraqis, both civilians and fighters, had died from the war up until that point.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/story\/123818\/iraq's_shocking_human_toll%3A_about_1_million_killed,_4.5_million_displaced,_1-2_million_widows,_5_million_orphans\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Credible research<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">estimates that more than 1 million Iraqis were killed, with 4.5 million displaced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cDespite the US military withdrawal,\u201d the report says, \u201cIraq\u2019s health, infrastructure, and education systems remain war-devastated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cMeanwhile, the $212 billion reconstruction effort was largely a failure with most of that money spent on security or lost to waste and fraud,\u201d Reuters reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Even from a crude US perspective, nothing of benefit has been gained from the war: it reinvigorated radical Islamist militants in the region and imposed another dictatorship on Iraqis that is now aligned with Iran instead of Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">After 9\/11, the Bush administration deliberately fixed fraudulent intelligence around the already existing policy of regime change in Iraq. Every initial justification for the war has been conclusively falsified, further lending credence to the claim that the war itself was criminal under international law.
