{"id":17403,"date":"2013-04-11T06:53:45","date_gmt":"2013-04-11T10:53:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=17403"},"modified":"2013-04-11T06:53:45","modified_gmt":"2013-04-11T10:53:45","slug":"missouri-man-arrested-at-hospital-for-refusing-to-leave-gay-partner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2013\/04\/missouri-man-arrested-at-hospital-for-refusing-to-leave-gay-partner\/","title":{"rendered":"Missouri Man Arrested at Hospital for Refusing to leave Gay Partner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/wdaf_hospital_rights_130411a-615x345.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17406\" alt=\"wdaf_hospital_rights_130411a-615x345\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/wdaf_hospital_rights_130411a-615x345.jpg?resize=490%2C274\" width=\"490\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><strong>By David Edwards<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">A gay man was arrested at a hospital in Missouri this week when he refused to leave the bedside of his partner, and now a restraining order is preventing him from any type of visitation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Roger Gorley<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fox4kc.com\/2013\/04\/10\/man-no-longer-allowed-to-visit-husband-at-kc-area-hospital\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">told WDAF<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">that even though he has power of attorney to handle his partner\u2019s affairs, a family member asked him to leave when he visited Research Medical Center in Kansas City on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Gorley said he refused to leave his partner Allen\u2019s bedside, and that\u2019s when security put him in handcuffs and escorted him from the building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">\u201cI was not recognized as being the husband, I wasn\u2019t recognized as being the partner,\u201d Gorley explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">He said the nurse refused to confirm that the couple shared power of attorney and made medical decision for each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">\u201cShe didn\u2019t even bother to look it up, to check in to it,\u201d the Lee\u2019s Summit resident recalled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">In a 2010 memorandum, President Barack Obama<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/04\/15\/AR2010041505502.html\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">ordered hospitals<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">that receive Medicare or Medicaid funding to allow visitation rights for gay and lesbian partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">For its part, Research Medical Center insisted that it does not discriminate based on sexual orientation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">\u201cWe believe involving the family is an important part of the patient care process,\u201d the hospital said in a statement. \u201cAnd, the patient`s needs are always our first priority. When anyone becomes disruptive to providing the necessary patient care, we involve our security team to help calm the situation and to protect our patients and staff.
