{"id":17539,"date":"2013-04-25T16:50:49","date_gmt":"2013-04-25T20:50:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=17539"},"modified":"2013-04-25T16:50:49","modified_gmt":"2013-04-25T20:50:49","slug":"obama-signs-2013-ndaa-blocking-closure-of-gitmo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2013\/04\/obama-signs-2013-ndaa-blocking-closure-of-gitmo\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama Signs 2013 NDAA, Blocking Closure of Gitmo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/guantanamo.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17540\" alt=\"Guantanamo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/guantanamo.jpg?resize=490%2C327\" width=\"490\" height=\"327\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"pagesub\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Obama initially threatened a veto, but instead signed it into law with a vague proviso<\/span><\/h4>\n<div><strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">by John Glaser<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color:#000000;\">President Barack Obama on Wednesday<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5hmDicXshGTT3vtL0l6VMzUzowCYA?docId=CNG.db45dca8000c913dd129fe724da53108.3a1\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">signed into law<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">the $633 billion defense authorization bill despite provisions that block any attempt to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center and try detainees on US soil.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The 2013 NDAA authorizes funding for the war in Afghanistan, tightens sanctions against Iran, funds special forces, and boosts\u00a0security at diplomatic posts abroad following the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi in September, among many other things.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">But the 680-page bill also\u00a0renews the prohibition against transferring terror detainees from the Guantanamo Bay detention center in\u00a0Cuba\u00a0to the United States for any purpose, a measure which again prevents Obama from fulfilling his pledge to close the black hole detention center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Obama<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2013\/jan\/3\/obama-signs-defense-measure-he-once-vowed-veto\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">initially threatened a veto<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">of the bill due to this provision, but the threat proved a false one. In a signing statement, Obama said he disagreed with the provision, despite his signing it into law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cI continue to oppose this provision, which substitutes the\u00a0Congress\u2019s blanket political determination for careful and fact-based determinations, made by counterterrorism and law enforcement professionals, of when and where to prosecute Guantanamo detainees,\u201d Obama wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cThis provision would, under certain circumstances, violate constitutional separation of powers principles.
