A shocking figure. But it&#8217;s actually much, much worse.<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/address>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">El<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/hhes\/www\/poverty\/about\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Census Bureau<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">has reported that 15% of Americans live in poverty. A shocking figure. But it&#8217;s actually much worse. Inequality is spreading like a shadowy disease through our country, infecting more and more households, and leaving a shrinking number of financially secure families to maintain the charade of prosperity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>1. Almost half of Americans had NO assets in 2009\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Analysis of\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/epi.3cdn.net\/2a7ccb3e9e618f0bbc_3nm6idnax.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Economic Policy Institute<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">data shows that Mitt Romney&#8217;s famous<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/newsfeed.time.com\/2012\/12\/13\/mitt-romneys-47-percent-gaffe-tops-yales-quotes-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">47 percent<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, the alleged &#8216;takers,&#8217; have taken nothing. Their debt exceeded their assets in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>2. It&#8217;s Even Worse 3 Years Later\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Since the recession, the disparities have continued to grow. An<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/els\/soc\/OECD2013-Inequality-and-Poverty-8p.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">OECD report<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">states that &#8220;inequality has increased by more over the past three years to the end of 2010 than in the previous twelve,&#8221; with the U.S. experiencing one of the widest gaps among OECD countries. The 30-year<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateofworkingamerica.org\/who-gains\/#\/?start=1979&amp;end=2008\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">decline in wages<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">has worsened since the recession, as low-wage jobs have<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nelp.org\/page\/-\/Job_Creation\/LowWageRecovery2012.pdf?nocdn=1\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">replaced<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">formerly secure middle-income positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>3. Based on wage figures, half of Americans are in or near poverty.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">El\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/file_source\/pub\/irs-soi\/10in05tr.xls\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">IRS<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">reports that the highest wage in the bottom half of earners is about $34,000. To be eligible for food assistance, a family can earn up to<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/snap\/applicant_recipients\/eligibility.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">130%<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">of the federal\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/aspe.hhs.gov\/poverty\/12poverty.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">poverty line<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, or about $30,000 for a family of four.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Even the Census Bureau recognizes that its own<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usagainstgreed.org\/CensusIncomeSummary2011.xls\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">figures<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">under-represent the number of people in poverty. Its\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/hhes\/povmeas\/methodology\/supplemental\/research\/SEHSD2012-18.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Supplemental Poverty Measure<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">increases, by 50%, the number of Americans who earn between one-half and two times the poverty threshold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>4. Based on household expense totals, poverty is creeping into the top half of America.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">A family in the top half, making $60,000 per year, will have their income reduced by a total tax bill of about $15,000 ($3,000 for<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/article\/summary-latest-federal-individual-income-tax-data-0\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">federal income tax<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">and $12,000 for<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/cms\/index.cfm?fa=view&amp;id=3505#_ftn8\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">payroll, state, and local taxes<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">. The<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stats.bls.gov\/cex\/22012\/midyear\/income.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">and the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/compendia\/statab\/2012\/tables\/12s0684.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Census Bureau<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">agree that food, housing, and transportation expenses will deduct another $30,000, and that total household expenditures will be about $50,000. That leaves nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Nothing, that is, except debt. The median<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/03\/24\/pf\/financial_crisis_outcome\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">debt level<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">rose to $75,600 in 2009, while the median family<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/12\/business\/economy\/family-net-worth-drops-to-level-of-early-90s-fed-says.html?_r=2&amp;\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">net worth<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, according to the Federal Reserve, dropped from $126,400 in 2007 to $77,300 in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>5. Putting it in Perspective\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Inequality is at its ugliest for the hungriest people. While food support was being targeted for<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/05\/14\/2010531\/senate-committee-approves-4b-in-food-aid-cuts-as-house-preps-even-worse-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">cuts<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, just<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usagainstgreed.org\/Fortune400_2011-12.xls\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">20 rich Americans<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">made as much from their 2012 investments as the entire<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.obpa.usda.gov\/budsum\/FY13budsum.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">2012 SNAP<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">(food assistance) budget, which serves 47 million people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">And as Congress continues to cut life-sustaining programs, its members should note that their 400 friends on the\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/edwindurgy\/2012\/10\/05\/who-got-rich-this-week-a-new-billionaire\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Forbes list<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">made more from their stock market gains last year than the total amount of the<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.obpa.usda.gov\/budsum\/FY13budsum.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">food<\/span><\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2013_United_States_federal_budget\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">housing<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, y<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2013_United_States_federal_budget\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">education<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">budgets\u00a0combined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Arguments about poverty won&#8217;t end.
