Former Ward 2 Councilman and\u00a0Chokwe Lumumba,\u00a0<\/strong>65, is the new mayor of\u00a0 Jackson, Miss., winning the general election with 87 percent of the vote, reports<\/span>\u00a0Fight Back! News.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just delighted. I feel wonderfully well about the people and their vote. Our slogan has been the people must decide and the people gave us an outstanding mandate today for positive change in the city of Jackson,\u201d Lumumba said. \u201cWe intend to work diligently and put all our hearts and efforts into that and we\u2019re going to be calling upon the people to work with us. We\u2019re not working by ourselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As previously reported by<\/span>\u00a0NewsOne<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, Lumumba served four years on the Jackson City Council before running for mayor. He spent part of the \u201970s and \u201980s as vice-president of\u00a0 the\u00a0Republic of New Afrika<\/strong>, an organization which advocated for \u201can independent predominantly black government\u201d in the southeastern United States and reparations for slavery.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe provisional government of Republic of New Afrika was always a group that believed in human rights for human beings,\u201d Lumumba told The Associated Press in a recent interview. \u201cI think it has been miscast in many ways. It has never been any kind of racist group or \u2018hate white\u2019 group in any way\u2026. It was a group which was fighting for human rights for black people in this country and at the same time supporting the human rights around the globe.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As an attorney, Lumumba has represented legendary activist, poet, actor and Hip-Hop artist\u00a0Tupac Shakur<\/strong>\u00a0in several cases, and his godmother,<\/span>\u00a0Assata Shakur,<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>whom Lumumba calls a \u201cBlack Panther heroine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Assata, formerly Joanne Chesimard, was a member of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army.<\/span><\/p>\n

She sought political asylum in Cuba after being accused of killing New Jersey state trooper, Werner Foerster, in 1977, and\u00a0 recently became the first woman placed on the FBI\u2019s \u201cMost Wanted Terrorists\u201d list. Medical evidence proved that it was \u201canatomically impossible\u201d for\u00a0Assata to kill Foerster after being shot by state trooper, James Harper, and forensic evidence proved that she had not fired a weapon. Even with that knowledge, the FBI recently raised the bounty on her head from $1 million to $2 million dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n
