The Steubenville<\/span>\u00a0rape case<\/span><\/a><\/span>, in which two high school football players were convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl at a party, helped spark a national conversation about<\/span>\u00a0consent<\/span><\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>victim-blaming<\/span><\/a><\/span>, and<\/span>\u00a0rape culture<\/span><\/a><\/span>. The case gained national attention after the \u201chacktivist\u201d group Anonymous leaked significant social media evidence implicating the assailants \u2014 including tweets, Instagram photos, and a<\/span>\u00a012-minute video of Steubenville high schoolers<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0joking about the rape. But it turns out that working to expose those rapists may land one Anonymous hacker more time in prison than the rapists themselves will serve.<\/span><\/p>\n

As\u00a0<\/span>Mother Jones reports<\/span><\/a><\/span>, 26-year-old Deric Lostutter \u2014 who has been known as \u201cKYAnonymous\u201d throughout his role in the Steubenville rape case \u2014 could face up to 10 years of jail time if he\u2019s convicted of hacking-related crimes. The FBI<\/span>\u00a0raided Losuetter\u2019s home<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0in April. The internet hacker\u00a0<\/span>told Mother Jones<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0that he believes the FBI investigation was motivated by Stebenville officials who want to send Lostutter a clear message: You shouldn\u2019t have gotten involved.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to make an example of me, saying, \u2018You don\u2019t fucking come after us. Don\u2019t question us,\u2019 \u201d Lostutter explained. Those type of power dynamics played out over the course of the sexual assault trial in the<\/span>\u00a0tiny Ohio town<\/span><\/a><\/span>, where many leaders in the community \u2014 like the high school football coach \u2014 played some role in<\/span>\u00a0covering up the rapists\u2019 crimes<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0because that was easier than disrupting the status quo.<\/span><\/p>\n

The two teens who were convicted of rape, Trent Mays and Ma\u2019lik Richmond,<\/span>\u00a0face up to two years<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0in a juvenile detention facility. Because they\u2019re both minors, neither of them will spend as much time behind bars as Lostutter potentially faces. Lostutter is preparing for a costly legal fight, and<\/span>\u00a0crowdsourcing outside donations<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0to help him fund it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0site<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0soliciting donations points out that \u201cDeric had the courage to stand up against rape.\u201d And he<\/span>\u00a0says<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0he would do it again, despite the potential consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anonymous continues to involve itself in exposing sexual crimes. After the intense harassment leveled against a Canadian teenager following her alleged gang rape<\/span>\u00a0led her to take her own life<\/span><\/a><\/span>, Anonymous stepped in to<\/span>\u00a0demand justice<\/span><\/a><\/span>, claiming their hackers were quickly able to identify the assailants.<\/span><\/p>\n
