{"id":18424,"date":"2013-06-24T06:16:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-24T10:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=18424"},"modified":"2013-06-24T06:16:00","modified_gmt":"2013-06-24T10:16:00","slug":"philadelphia-closes-23-schools-new-400-million-prison-being-built","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2013\/06\/philadelphia-closes-23-schools-new-400-million-prison-being-built\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia Closes 23 Schools, New $400 Million Prison Being Built"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/philadelphianewprison.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18425\" alt=\"PhiladelphiaNewPrison\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/philadelphianewprison.png?resize=301%2C251\" width=\"301\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">By<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a title=\"View user profile.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.opposingviews.com\/users\/michael-allen\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">Michael Allen<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Philadelphia officials are closing almost two dozen schools and decimating the budgets of the remaining schools under a so-called \u201cdoomsday\u201d education plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">However, amid all these cuts for education, the state of Pennsylvania is building a new $400 million prison for Philadelphia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Pennsylvania\u2019s School Reform Commission voted on March 7 to close 23 schools, reported the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/08\/education\/philadelphia-officials-vote-to-close-23-schools.html?_r=0\">\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">The same commission voted on June 1 to approve a $2.4 billion budget that will radically undercut the schools that stay open.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">According to<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/articles.philly.com\/2013-06-01\/news\/39658243_1_school-budget-dworetzky-new-funds\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">Philly.com<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\">, the budget cuts mean that &#8220;schools will open in the fall without new books, paper, clubs, counselors, librarians, assistant principals, or secretaries. Athletics, art, and music would be gone. There could be 3,000 layoffs, including some teachers. Class sizes would be larger, and schools would have no aides to help manage them or support staff to monitor lunchrooms and playgrounds.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">The schools need $304 million, but that is unlikely because the Republican-controlled Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed a tax break in May for corporations.
