George Zimmerman, who is on trial for the murder of Trayvon Martin, called police in<\/span>\u00a0Florida 46 times<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0in recent years to report break-ins, broken windows and disturbances, records showed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prosecutors argued in court on Tuesday that the jury should be played several calls in which Mr Zimmerman complained of \u201csuspicious\u201d Black people around his gated community in Sanford.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then 28, he used the same term in a call to police on February 26 last year to describe Trayvon, who was walking back from a supermarket to a house he was visiting, before shooting him dead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Richard Mantel, a state prosecutor, told Judge Debra Nelson the calls would show Zimmerman had a record of \u201cprofiling\u201d and had a \u201cbuilding level of frustration\u201d about crime in his area.<\/span><\/p>\n

In one call Mr Zimmerman made to police earlier in February 2012, he reported seeing a Black man going through a neighbour\u2019s bins. \u201cI know the resident. He\u2019s caucasian,\u201d he told the dispatcher.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark O\u2019Mara, one of Mr Zimmerman\u2019s lawyers, said that the calls merely proved that Mr Zimmerman was an active member of his community. He dismissed the argument that they disclosed his \u201cstate of mind\u201d, saying that prosecutors planned to use the recordings to tarnish the defendant\u2019s character.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going to ask the jury to make a leap from a good, responsible, citizen\u2019s behaviour to seething behaviour,\u201d Mr O\u2019Mara said of the prosecution\u2019s depiction of George Zimmerman\u2019s actions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judge Nelson was expected to rule on Wednesday on whether the calls could be used in the trial.<\/span><\/p>\n

The co-ordinator of Sanford Police Department\u2019s neighbourhood watch programme yesterday told the jury that watch captains such as Mr Zimmerman were told not to \u201cengage\u201d with suspicious people.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey are the eyes and ears of law enforcement,\u201d said Wendy Dorival, the police manager. \u201cThey\u2019re not supposed to take matters into their own hands.\u201d A close friend of Trayvon, who was speaking to him on the telephone when the confrontation with Mr Zimmerman occurred, testified to the court later on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The friend, identified in court only as Rachel, has been billed as a \u201cstar witness\u201d for the prosecution. \u201cRachel testified that she heard Trayvon Martin ask \u2018what are you following me for\u2019, then Travyon\u2019s phone went dead. Then Trayvon went dead,\u201d prosecutors told the court during their opening statements.<\/span><\/p>\n

George Zimmerman, 29, claims that he killed Trayvon Martin in self-defence after being attacked. He has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted. The trial, which is expected to last up to three weeks, continues.<\/span><\/p>\n
