He<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2013\/jul\/05\/bolivia-morales-close-us-embassy\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">declared<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Being united will defeat American imperialism. We met with the leaders of my party and they asked us for several measures and if necessary, we will close the embassy of the United States. We do not need the embassy of the United States.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">The South American government leaders blasted the &#8216;kidnapping&#8217; of the Bolivian president as an act of brute power, revealing that the U.S. and European governments still view themselves as the colonial rulers of Latin America. Uruguay&#8217;s president Jose Mujica<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2013\/jul\/05\/bolivia-morales-close-us-embassy\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">declared<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#000000\">We are not colonies any more. We deserve respect, and when one of our governments is insulted we feel the insult throughout Latin America.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-23190278\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">pointed out:<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#000000\">If this had happened to the president of the United States, it probably would have been grounds for war.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Washington is widely believed to have applied the political pressure to France, Portugal, Italy and Spain that led to the forced downing of the Bolivian president&#8217;s flight. European countries acted on a tip that Snowden was on board the flight, the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2013\/jul\/05\/european-states-snowden-morales-plane-nsa\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">media revealed<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">Thursday, but they refused to admit where the information came from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Snowden was not found on the flight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Morale<\/span>s\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2013\/jul\/02\/edward-snowden-bolivia-lifeline-asylum\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">said Tuesday<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">that he would grant political asylum to Snowden if asked. Critics have slammed the U.S. for the global manhunt for Snowden, declaring it retaliatory against whistleblowing and bullying of countries that do not participate in the crackdown.\u00a0<em>Guardian\u00a0<\/em>writer John Pilger had<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2013\/jul\/04\/forcing-down-morales-plane-air-piracy\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">harsh words<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">for the incident:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#000000\">The forcing down of Bolivian President Evo Morales&#8217;s plane \u2013 denied airspace by France, Spain and Portugal, followed by his 14-hour confinement while Austrian officials demanded to &#8220;inspect&#8221; his aircraft for the &#8220;fugitive&#8221; Edward Snowden \u2013 was an act of air piracy and state terrorism.
