But while the site is clearly meant to illustrate that McDonalds workers should be able to live on their meager wages, it actually underscores exactly how hard it is for a low-paid fast food worker to get by.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The site includes a sample \u201c<\/span><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.practicalmoneyskills.com\/mcdonalds\/budget\/budget2.php\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">budget journal<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201d for McDonalds\u2019 employees that offers a laughably inaccurate view of what it\u2019s like to budget on a minimum wage job. Not only does the budget leave a spot open for \u201csecond job,\u201d it also gives wholly unreasonable estimates for employees\u2019 costs: $20 a month for health care, $0 for heating, and $600 a month for rent. It does not include any budgeted money for food or clothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/screen-shot-2013-07-15-at-9-29-08-am-1.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18697\" alt=\"Screen-shot-2013-07-15-at-9.29.08-AM (1)\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/screen-shot-2013-07-15-at-9-29-08-am-1.png?resize=467%2C588\" width=\"467\" height=\"588\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Basically every facet of this budget is unachievable. For an uninsured person to independently buy health care, he or she must shell out on average<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/individual-premiums\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">$215 a month<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u2014 just for an individual plan. While some full-time McDonald\u2019s workers do qualify for the company\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703431604575522413101063070.html?mod=e2tw\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">$14 a week health plan<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, that offer caps coverage at $10,000 a year and is often insufficient. If that person wants to eat, \u201cmoderate\u201d spending will run them $32 a week for themselves, and $867 a month to feed a family of four. And if a fast food worker is living in a city? Well, New York City rents just reached an average of<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/07\/09\/new-york-city-rent_n_3568278.html\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">$3,000 a month.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The sample budget is also available<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Screen-shot-2013-07-15-at-9.28.53-AM.png\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">in Spanish<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">. On another section of the site, it<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/07\/15\/2300321\/mcdonalds-buget-low-wage\/You%20can%20have%20almost%20anything%20you%20want%20as%20long%20as%20you%20plan%20ahead%20and%20save%20for%20it.\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">concludes<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, \u201cYou can have almost anything you want as long as you plan ahead and save for it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Neither McDonalds nor Visa returned requests for comment by the time of publication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Last year, Bloomberg News found that it would take the average McDonalds employee<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2012\/12\/12\/1322231\/mcdonalds-worker-one-million-hours\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">one million hours of work<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">to earn as much money as the company\u2019s CEO. This immense wage disparity in the fast food industry has sparked a series of<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2012\/11\/29\/1254521\/nyc-fast-food-strike-wages\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">protests and walk-outs<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">by low-wage workers working at fast food chains around the country \u2014 in<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/04\/04\/1819821\/new-york-fast-food-strike\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">New York<\/span><\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/04\/24\/1912101\/why-chicagos-fast-food-workers-are-striking-today\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Chicago<\/span><\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/05\/21\/2040801\/low-wage-workers-strike-in-washington-sixth-city-in-wave-of-actions\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Washington<\/span><\/a><\/span>,<span style=\"color:#000000;\"> y<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/05\/30\/2078111\/workers-strike-in-seventh-city-as-congressional-progressives-launch-campaign-to-boost-wages\/\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Seattle<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, to name a few cities, workers from chains including KFC, McDonalds, Burger King, and Taco Bell have spoken publicly about the need for serious wage increases across the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/07\/15\/2300321\/mcdonalds-buget-low-wage\/?mobile=nc\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Fuente<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Annie-Rose Strasser McDonalds has partnered with Visa to\u00a0launch a website\u00a0to help its low-wage workers making an average $8.25 an hour to budget.
