Fifteen-year-old Anthony Stokes has been denied the heart transplant that would save his life<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Fifteen-year-old Anthony Stokes has less than six months to live unless he receives an emergency heart transplant. But his family has been told that Anthony doesn\u2019t qualify for the transplant list because he has a \u201c<\/span>history of non-compliance<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u201d \u2014 partly due to his history of earning low grades and having some trouble with the law.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey said they don\u2019t have any evidence that he would take his medicine or that he would go to his follow-ups,\u201d Melencia Hamilton, Anthony\u2019s mother,<\/span>told WSBTV News<\/span><\/a><\/span>. Hamilton explained that her son has an enlarged heart, and a transplant is the only thing that will help his condition.<\/span><\/p>\n

The doctors at Children\u2019s Healthcare of Atlanta weren\u2019t very specific about what exactly contributed to their decision to label Anthony as \u201cnon-compliant.\u201d But family friends<\/span>\u00a0explained to WSBTV News<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0that they were told it\u2019s partly because of Anthony\u2019s performance in school and run-ins with law enforcement.<\/span><\/p>\n

His family and friends don\u2019t accept that as a valid reason to deny the teen life-saving treatment. \u201cWe must save Anthony\u2019s life,\u201d family friend Mack Major, identified as Anthony\u2019s mentor,<\/span>\u00a0told CBS Atlanta<\/span><\/a><\/span>. \u201cWe don\u2019t have a lot of time to do it, but it\u2019s something that must be done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Civil rights organizations are beginning to take up Anthony\u2019s cause, saying a child\u2019s past shouldn\u2019t have anything to do with the medical care they receive. \u201cHe\u2019s been given a death sentence because of a broad and vague excuse of non-compliance,\u201d a representative from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Christine Young Brown,<\/span>\u00a0dicho<\/span><\/a><\/span>. \u201cThere was nothing specific in that decision. Just non-compliance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless of Anthony\u2019s specific past, his story fits into a larger pattern of<\/span>\u00a0racially-motivated skepticism<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0about young black men. The routine<\/span>\u00a0criminalization of black youth<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 thanks in large part to the so-called \u201c<\/span>school-to-prison pipeline<\/span><\/a><\/span>,\u201d which funnels a<\/span>\u00a0disproportionate number of black teens<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0into the justice system for minor infractions \u2014 ensures that teens like Anthony are often seen as threats. And once society labels those kids as criminal, suspect, or \u201cnon-compliant,\u201d their lives are typically<\/span>\u00a0considered to have less value<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n
