{"id":19203,"date":"2013-09-16T17:29:19","date_gmt":"2013-09-16T21:29:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=19203"},"modified":"2013-09-16T17:29:19","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T21:29:19","slug":"abu-ghraib-torture-victims-ordered-to-pay-u-s-contractors-legal-fees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2013\/09\/abu-ghraib-torture-victims-ordered-to-pay-u-s-contractors-legal-fees\/","title":{"rendered":"Abu Ghraib Torture Victims Ordered To Pay U.S. Contractor&#8217;s Legal Fees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/abu-ghraid-torture.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19204\" alt=\"ABu-Ghraid-torture\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/abu-ghraid-torture.jpg?resize=490%2C326\" width=\"490\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>By Christina Wilkie<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color:#000000;\">A federal judge on Wednesday ordered four Iraqis who were imprisoned at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison to pay nearly $14,000 in legal fees to defense contractor CACI, an Arlington, Va.-based company that supplied interrogators to the U.S. government during the Iraq War.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"entry_12345\">\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The decision in favor of CACI stemmed from a lawsuit filed by the former prisoners in 2008, alleging that CACI employees directed the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib. The suit<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/capitalbusiness\/abu-ghraib-case-against-caci-dismissed\/2013\/06\/26\/0a961b70-de7f-11e2-948c-d644453cf169_story.html\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">was dismissed in June<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, when U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/capitalbusiness\/abu-ghraib-case-against-caci-dismissed\/2013\/06\/26\/0a961b70-de7f-11e2-948c-d644453cf169_story.html\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">ruled<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">that because the alleged acts took place on foreign soil, CACI was \u201cimmune from suit\u201d in U.S. court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Lee did not, however, directly address the question of whether CACI employees took part in the mistreatment of prisoners. The treatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib exploded into an international scandal in 2004, when shocking photos emerged of prisoners being stacked on top of each other, threatened with dogs, and sexually abused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">A little over a month after winning the dismissal this summer, CACI\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/capital-business\/post\/caci-seeking-payment-from-former-abu-ghraib-prisoners\/2013\/08\/12\/4c573550-035d-11e3-a07f-49ddc7417125_blog.html\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">requested<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">that the former prisoners be ordered to pay $15,580 to cover the company\u2019s legal expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Lawyers for the Iraqis disputed that their clients should pay CACI\u2019s bills, partly because the Iraqis had \u201cvery limited financial means, even by non-U.S. standards, and dramatically so when compared\u201d to CACI, according to a court filing. Moreover, they wrote, the initial claims against CACI, involving \u201cserious claims of torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, and war crimes were dismissed on very close, difficult \u2014 and only recently arguable \u2014 grounds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Attorneys for the Iraqi prisoners have said they<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/capital-business\/post\/court-grants-cacis-request-for-legal-fees\/2013\/09\/04\/e1b2562c-1567-11e3-804b-d3a1a3a18f2c_blog.html?wprss=rss_local-arlington-social&amp;utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">plan to file an appeal<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">of the June dismissal this fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">CACI did not respond to a request for comment on the ruling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The massive defense contractor has long denied allegations that its employees abused or directed others to abuse prisoners at Abu Ghraib. A<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.caci.com\/iraq\/truth_error.shtml\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">statement on CACI\u2019s website<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">notes that \u201cNeither CACI nor any of its employees have been found or proven to be involved in\u201d or \u201cparticipated in\u201d or \u201ccharged\u201d with abuse, nor have they been indicted for \u201cdirecting abuse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In 2008, CACI\u2019s executive chairman, J.
