Guido Barilla, president of the family-owned Barilla pasta company, said in a radio interview on Wednesday that his company only supports \u201cthe traditional family\u201d and that LGBT people \u201ccan go eat someone else\u2019s pasta.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0According to John Aravosis at Americablog<\/span><\/a><\/span>, Barilla has since backtracked on his remarks somewhat, but many LGBT people around the world are reacting angrily to the slam by the head of the massive, global brand.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe won\u2019t include gays in our ads, because we like the traditional family,\u201d Barilla told an interviewer. \u201cIf gays don\u2019t like it, they can always eat another brand of pasta. Everyone is free to do what they want, provided it doesn\u2019t bother anyone else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Barilla said today that he meant no ill will toward LGBT people with his remarks,<\/span>\u00a0saying in a statement<\/span><\/a><\/span>, \u201cWith reference to statements made yesterday, I apologize if my words have generated controversy or misunderstanding, or if they have hurt the sensibilities of some people. In the interview I simply wanted to highlight the central role of the woman in the family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He also said that he has \u201cthe utmost respect for any person, without distinction of any kind,\u201d and \u201cthe greatest respect for gays and for the freedom of expression of anyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Reuters reported<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0that rights groups are calling for a boycott of Barilla\u2019s pastas, sauces and other foods.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aurelio Mancuso of Equality Italia called Barilla\u2019s remarks an \u201coffensive provocation\u201d and added that \u201c(w)e accept the invitation from the Barilla owner to not eat his pasta.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Gay Italian minister of parliament Alessandro Zan<\/span>\u00a0tweeted<\/span><\/a><\/span>, \u201cYou can\u2019t mess around with consumers, including gay ones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
