Como miembro del Congreso Nacional Africano (ANC), abandon\u00f3 su postura no violenta tras la masacre de Sharpeville en 1960 y contribuy\u00f3 a fundar Umkhonto we Sizwe (Lanza de la Naci\u00f3n), el brazo militar del ANC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Mandela fue arrestado en 1962, condenado a cadena perpetua y cumpli\u00f3 27 a\u00f1os en las c\u00e1rceles del r\u00e9gimen supremacista blanco del apartheid. Mantuvo un amplio apoyo popular entre la mayor\u00eda negra de Sud\u00e1frica y se convirti\u00f3 en un \u00edcono revolucionario internacional. Tras su liberaci\u00f3n en 1990, asumi\u00f3 la presidencia del ANC en 1991. En 1993, recibi\u00f3 el Premio Nobel de la Paz por su labor para acabar con el apartheid. En 1994, fue elegido presidente de Sud\u00e1frica en las primeras elecciones con sufragio universal del pa\u00eds. Para cuando dej\u00f3 el cargo en 1999, Mandela era una de las figuras m\u00e1s respetadas del \u00c1frica poscolonial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Nelson Mandela fue uno de los grandes luchadores por la liberaci\u00f3n de nuestro tiempo, un h\u00e9roe del movimiento anticolonial y de la lucha contra el racismo global. Vivi\u00f3 una vida plena.
