{"id":19735,"date":"2013-11-29T23:11:51","date_gmt":"2013-11-30T04:11:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=19735"},"modified":"2013-11-29T23:11:51","modified_gmt":"2013-11-30T04:11:51","slug":"controversial-study-linking-gm-corn-to-tumors-in-rats-retracted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2013\/11\/controversial-study-linking-gm-corn-to-tumors-in-rats-retracted\/","title":{"rendered":"Se retira un estudio controvertido que vinculaba el ma\u00edz transg\u00e9nico con tumores en ratas."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ku-xlargegmostudy.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19736\" alt=\"ku-xlargeGMOstudy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ku-xlargegmostudy.jpg?resize=640%2C360\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Since its publication in September 2012,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0278691512005637\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">a study that showed rats fed Monsanto\u2019s glyphosate-resistant NK603 maize developed more tumors than controls<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\">has been<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/efsajournal\/pub\/2986.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">roundly<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0278691512007909\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">criticized<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">for its<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0278691512007892\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">poor experimental design<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">y<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/hyped-gm-maize-study-faces-growing-scrutiny-1.11566\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">dubious<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0278691512007843\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">statistical methods.<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">Yesterday, the study was retracted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">The retraction was initiated by the journal\u00a0<em>Food and Chemical Toxicology<\/em>\u00a0after the authors refused to withdraw it themselves.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/study-linking-gm-maize-to-rat-tumours-is-retracted-1.14268\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">Writes Barbara Casassus for\u00a0<em>Nature News<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#000000\">The paper, from a research group led by Gilles-Eric S\u00e9ralini, a molecular biologist at the University of Caen, France, and published in 2012<\/span><span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><sup><a title=\"S\u00e9ralini, G.-E. et al. Food Chem. Toxicol. 50, 4221\u20134231 (2012).\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/study-linking-gm-maize-to-rat-tumours-is-retracted-1.14268#b1\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">1<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\">, showed \u201cno evidence of fraud or intentional misrepresentation of the data\u201d, said<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/about\/press-releases\/research-and-journals\/elsevier-announces-article-retraction-from-journal-food-and-chemical-toxicology\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">a statement from Elsevier<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\">, which publishes the journal. But the small number and type of animals used in the study means that \u201cno definitive conclusions can be reached\u201d. The known high incidence of tumours in the Sprague-Dawley rat \u201dcannot be excluded as the cause of the higher mortality and incidence observed in the treated groups\u201d, it added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Today\u2019s move came as no surprise. Earlier this month, the journal\u2019s editor-in-chief, Wallace Hayes, threatened retraction if S\u00e9ralini refused to withdraw the paper, which is exactly what he announced at a press conference in Brussels this morning. S\u00e9ralini and his team remained unrepentant, and allege that the retraction derives from the journal&#8217;s editorial appointment of biologist Richard Goodman, who previously worked for biotechnology giant Monsanto for seven years.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">The important thing to remember about<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/the-most-important-thing-youll-read-today-is-an-articl-950635470\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">GMOs<\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/nature-devotes-an-issue-to-genetically-modified-organis-486327304\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">\u00a0is that\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/gmos-are-one-solution-to-an-ancient-puzzle-458716189\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">they are merely one solution to an ancient human puzzle<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\">, viz.\u00a0how do we feed ourselves, and how do we do it\u00a0<em>safely?\u00a0<\/em>Are they the end-all-be-all solution to challenges of agricultural productivity? Hardly. But neither are they unambiguously cancer-causing scourges upon humanity. Studies like this, which cut corners to arrive at a scary conclusion, undercut both sides of the GMO debate by painting one side as credulous and the other as obstinate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\">What we need is solid science and a measured approach to interpretation.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/nature-devotes-an-issue-to-genetically-modified-organis-486327304\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">As\u00a0<em>Nature<\/em>\u00a0reporter Natasha Gilbert<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000\">noted<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/case-studies-a-hard-look-at-gm-crops-1.12907\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">in her recent investigation of GM crops<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#000000\">Tody stories, in favour of or against GM crops, will always miss the bigger picture, which is nuanced, equivocal and undeniably messy. Transgenic crops will not solve all the agricultural challenges facing the developing or developed world&#8230; but vilification is not appropriate either.
