{"id":20493,"date":"2016-11-10T23:42:12","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T04:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=20493"},"modified":"2016-11-10T23:42:12","modified_gmt":"2016-11-11T04:42:12","slug":"communist-group-at-rutgers-protests-standing-rock-with-brower-rally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2016\/11\/communist-group-at-rutgers-protests-standing-rock-with-brower-rally\/","title":{"rendered":"Communist group at Rutgers protests Standing Rock with Brower rally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/2016\/11\/10\/communist-group-at-rutgers-protests-standing-rock-with-brower-rally\/some-men\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20494\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20494\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/some-men.jpg?resize=700%2C387&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"some-men\" width=\"700\" height=\"387\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Photo by<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytargum.com\/staff\/jason-ye\">Jason Ye<\/a> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">|\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The All Marxists-Leninists Union held a rally on the steps of Brower Commons on Tuesday to support Native Americans protesting the construction of an oil pipeline near their homes in Standing Rock, North Dakota.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Members of the All Marxist-Leninist Union and the American Party of Labor gathered on the steps of the Brower Dining Commons to protest construction <\/span>on<span style=\"color:#000000;\"> the Dakota Access pipeline on Wednesday night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Donald Courter, the general secretary of the All Marxists-Leninists Union, said the protest\u2019s goal was to show solidarity with the Sioux Native American tribe\u00a0affected by a <\/span>1,172 mile<span style=\"color:#000000;\"> pipeline, called the Dakota Access Pipeline, being built\u00a0in Standing Rock\u00a0while also fighting against capitalistic ideals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cThere are people all over the country who are fighting against this injustice and who are being attacked by the police so we held this rally here to support them and to increase <\/span>visibility<span style=\"color:#000000;\"> of the issue,\u201d the School of Arts and Sciences senior said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The Dakota Access Pipeline is designed to transport oil across state lines towards Illinois. Once completed, the $3.7 billion project would span 1,172 miles and <\/span>cross<span style=\"color:#000000;\"> four state lines,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/09\/07\/us\/dakota-access-pipeline-visual-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>according to CNN<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">About 10 protesters participated in the event. One waved a communist flag while the rest held picket signs with slogans ranging from \u201cI Stand With Standing Rock\u201d to \u201cDeath to Capitalism.\u201d After a series of chants, three individuals gave speeches about capitalist greed and its connection to the pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The proposed pipeline would encroach on the land of the Sioux Native American tribe in Standing Rock. Activists claim the project will contaminate the local water supply and worsen the living conditions of indigenous people,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/29\/us\/dakota-access-pipeline-protest.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>according to the New York Times<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Since August, more than 400 individuals have been arrested in association with protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline, The New York Times reported. Use of <\/span>teargas<span style=\"color:#000000;\">, rubber <\/span>bullets<span style=\"color:#000000;\"> and violence have been reported across the country, but construction on the project has continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cWe know that this rally alone will not single-handedly solve the problem but maybe it will prompt people to take a closer look at the system and rethink the capitalist ideals that are behind this,\u201d Courter said, \u201cWithout a mass movement, the capitalists will continue to plunder the land and prioritize profit over the lives of human beings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The All Marxists-Leninists Union meets every Thursday in Scott Hall. The group has an active presence on campus and held a similar rally<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytargum.com\/article\/2016\/10\/all-marxists-leninists-union-rallies-against-columbus-day\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>earlier in the semester to protest Columbus Day<\/strong><\/a>, <span style=\"color:#000000;\">said Kevin Kipp, a Middlesex Community College student.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cOur main cause is solidarity with the people of standing rock as they fight against the Dakota Access pipeline. But we are also a <\/span>Marxist Leninist<span style=\"color:#000000;\"> union so we are, of course, also protesting the injustices of capitalism.\u201d Kipp said, \u201cDeath to the bourgeoisie. It is time for proletariats to throw off our chains of oppression.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Kipp said he became involved in the union unofficially through one of his friends at Rutgers. He was one the three students to give speeches during the rally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">He said the group&#8217;s Standing Rock protest was not originally intended to coincide with Election Day. On principle, the group said rather than vote for one of the two candidates, they would prefer for a \u201csocial revolution to overthrow the government and establish a worker state,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Most members said they voted for third-party candidates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cAmidst the clamor of the bourgeoisie democratic election, as we are forced to choose between two demagogue candidates, we will stand against those who exploit <\/span>us<span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201d Kipp said, \u201cThis protest today is merely the continuation of an age long historical process that will inevitably end with the dismantling of capitalism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Leonard Zorfass, head of the New Jersey Division of the American Party of Labor also spoke at the rally. He referred to the Dakota Access pipeline as the country\u2019s latest expression of genocide, <\/span>imperialism<span style=\"color:#000000;\"> and oppression in the name \u201cgrow or die\u201d economics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Infringing on the land and the water of the indigenous people in Standing Rock indicates that the government is prioritizing money from big oil companies over the lives of the Sioux people, Zorfass said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cAs we speak, over 10,000 people are bravely standing against the United States\u2019 expression of imperialism at standing rock,\u201d he said, \u201cThe pipeline is being constructed on the sacred, promised land of Native Americans in order to satisfy corporate profit motives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Courter closed out the speeches by encouraging Rutgers students to unify and take action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u201cI call to you to stand together with us, in solidarity against the Dakota Access pipeline and fight for clean water for indigenous people and for all peoples,\u201d he said,\u201d We will end the exploitation of working people at the hands of our capitalist overlords.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Kira Herzog is a School of Arts and Sciences sophomore majoring in political science and journalism and media studies.
