PRESS RELEASE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n 21 April 2017<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n A historic referandum on the <\/span>way the <\/span>country will be <\/span>governed<\/span> has been <\/span>stained<\/span> <\/span>by a YSK intervention that turned the result on its head. This scandal, on top of the polarisation and the mounting reaction, led to the <\/span>response<\/span> of the people; in defence of their votes, people<\/span> continue<\/span> to say no to \u201cOne Man Rule\u201d<\/span>. This referandum is void and should be <\/span>annulled<\/span>. It is best to stand <\/span>with demands of work, peace and democracy <\/span>against those dividing the people with threats and oppression in the name of the Presidential system.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The fact that the choice in the referandum between \u2018Yes\u2019 and \u2018No\u2019 <\/span>was on a knife edge <\/span> <\/span>– even under<\/span> unequal and unjust conditions and under conditions of <\/span>State of Emergency (<\/span>OHAL<\/span>) and oppression –<\/span> led to the intervention and <\/span>fraud<\/span>. This intervention <\/span>was by<\/span> the <\/span>High<\/span> <\/span>Electoral<\/span> <\/span>Board<\/span> (<\/span>YSK<\/span>)<\/span>, which is <\/span>required to be <\/span>neutral but acted like an organ of the government.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n El <\/span>YSK<\/span> decision <\/span>before the voting had ended <\/span>\u2013<\/span> <\/span>with AKP\u2019s demand<\/span> y <\/span>against<\/span> <\/span>definitive<\/span> judgement in law <\/span>\u2013 <\/span>to accept <\/span>unstamped <\/span>votes<\/span> legitimised<\/span> <\/span>fraud<\/span> y <\/span>hijacking<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>As if that <\/span>was not<\/span> enough, <\/span>all opposition and demands for <\/span>annulment<\/span> have been refused by YSK; the <\/span>referendum<\/span> results, damaged and its legality disputable, <\/span>are<\/span> <\/span>trumpeted<\/span> as the success of the \u2018Yes\u2019 camp.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The level of government oppression, leading to even the YSK to act unlawful<\/span>ly<\/span>, deepened the crisis of public trust in the government and the<\/span> rule of<\/span> law. <\/span>El <\/span>fraud and<\/span> intervention in the referendum,<\/span> disre<\/span>specting the <\/span>voluntad <\/span>of the <\/span>country<\/span>, <\/span>did<\/span> not gone down well with those voting \u2018Yes\u2019<\/span> but not <\/span>party to<\/span> the <\/span>hijacking<\/span>, a victory has not been felt. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Frenzied<\/span> projects, promises and <\/span>referendum<\/span> bribes, the burden of which are borne by the public, have not transferred into votes this time round. The exhaustive use of ideological-polit<\/span>ical dispositions and scaremongering<\/span> <\/span>aiming <\/span>to divide and polarise workers in production and living spheres<\/span> such as external enemies, terror, military coup, religious-sectarian enmity, racism, etc.<\/span>; the use of these as a means of propaganda to crush democratic opposition on the streets; neither of these have led to the desired result. Those that <\/span>insist on<\/span> the Presidency regime<\/span> and the continuation of the 15-year<\/span> rule have<\/span> also<\/span> <\/span>been <\/span>politically <\/span>defeated.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n In industrial and trading cities <\/span>where<\/span> modern life, class relations and conflicts are dominant, starting with Istanbul -where they held in power since 1994- the \u2018No\u2019 vote <\/span>won<\/span>. AKP and MHP have lost serious <\/span>number<\/span> of votes in all <\/span>Metropoles<\/span> where they previously held a big share of the vote.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Consequently<\/span>, Erdo\u011fan, <\/span>the <\/span>AKP<\/span> Government and <\/span>the <\/span>capital that back<\/span>s<\/span> them did not get the support among the urban workers, youth and women; despite their efforts to entice their votes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Faced with this scene, the head of the state, <\/span>constantly talking<\/span> about \u2018<\/span>t<\/span>he will of the people\u2019<\/span>, <\/span>having <\/span>declared the opposition as enemies<\/span>, clearly stated his intention to continue <\/span>lawlessness<\/span>, <\/span>arbitrariness<\/span> and aggressive politics with his statement of \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s too late in the day<\/span>\u201d<\/span>. <\/span>The extension of <\/span>OHAL<\/span> and reminders of arrangeme<\/span>nts for capital punishment, as an instrument <\/span>to discipline and threaten all sectors of the public, are an expression of this aggression. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The unemployment rate of 25% among the youth defending <\/span>the No vote on the streets, reaching 13% country<\/span>wide<\/span>; price increases and <\/span>the poverty economics grow<\/span>ing with <\/span>belt-tightening policies<\/span>; millions of workers and public workers subjected to <\/span>worsening working and living conditions<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>mainly <\/span>through <\/span>removal of rights such as <\/span>pay scales and job security;<\/span> the Kurdish population and their demands of a shared democratic life, subjected to conditions of war and <\/span>punishment<\/span> in an attempt to silence and push them outside of <\/span>the <\/span>political <\/span>scene<\/span>; the parliamentary front<\/span>,<\/span> potent for new political crises in <\/span>the<\/span> period of adjustment laws; <\/span>prejudice<\/span> against 3.5 million refugee workers trying to survive but seen as a burden on the country; a Turkish population with <\/span>increased<\/span> worries, insecurities and anger.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n This shows that <\/span>we are entering the post-<\/span>referendum<\/span> period with lots of <\/span>problems<\/span> as a country and people. Developments show that workers, labourers, women and the youth will need to struggle under harsher conditions. Therefore, we need to raise the struggle for economic, social, democratic rights and <\/span>political<\/span> freedoms.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n El <\/span>referendum<\/span> results that ignore the people<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s will must be <\/span>annulled<\/span>. We need to work for a democratic constitution that <\/span>involves<\/span> the demands of the people, <\/span>that is <\/span>inclusive and prepared by a founding parliament. Hence, <\/span>we need to raise protests in the streets and our democratic opposition to stop those that intervened <\/span>fraudulently and hijacked <\/span>the results, those that made a <\/span>referendum<\/span> lost look like a <\/span>referendum<\/span> won.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n We need to carry this struggle to May Day, the International unity, struggle and solidarity day of the working class. We must celebrate May Day 2017 <\/span>IT WILL NOT BE OVER UNTIL THE PEOPLE SAY SO<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n
