El Partido Laborista Comunista fue fundado el 31 de agosto de 1919 por John Reed, Benjamin Gitlow y otros miembros expulsados del Partido Socialista de Am\u00e9rica. Al d\u00eda siguiente, el Partido Comunista de Am\u00e9rica fue fundado por m\u00e1s miembros expulsados del Partido Socialista de Am\u00e9rica y del antiguo Partido Socialista de Michigan. La Internacional Comunista (Comintern) alent\u00f3 a estos dos partidos nacientes a fusionarse bajo la bandera de la unidad. Los comunistas estadounidenses desempe\u00f1aron un papel fundamental en la direcci\u00f3n y organizaci\u00f3n de numerosos grupos, como la Liga Americana por la Paz y la Democracia, el Congreso Nacional Negro, la Uni\u00f3n Americana de Escritores y el Congreso de la Juventud Americana. Tambi\u00e9n fueron actores clave en los sindicatos y, para 1945, lideraban dieciocho filiales del Congreso de Organizaciones Industriales (CIO), que representaban a 1.370.000 trabajadores; una cuarta parte del total de miembros del CIO.
