{"id":7670,"date":"2011-08-08T06:23:05","date_gmt":"2011-08-08T06:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theredphoenixapl.org\/?p=7670"},"modified":"2011-08-08T06:23:05","modified_gmt":"2011-08-08T06:23:05","slug":"hiroshima-day-2003-secret-meeting-on-the-privatization-of-nuclear-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redphoenix.news\/es\/2011\/08\/hiroshima-day-2003-secret-meeting-on-the-privatization-of-nuclear-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Hiroshima Day 2003: Secret Meeting on the Privatization of Nuclear War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/hiroshima_nagasaki_in_1945_1.jpg\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7671\" title=\"Hiroshima_Nagasaki_in_1945_1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/hiroshima_nagasaki_in_1945_1.jpg?resize=287%2C391\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"391\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>by Michel Chossudovsky<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">At no point since the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945, has humanity been closer to the unthinkable \u2013 a nuclear holocaust which could potentially spread in terms of radioactive fallout over a large part of the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">All the safeguards of the Cold War era, which categorized the nuclear bomb as \u201ca weapon of last resort\u201d, have been scrapped. \u201cOffensive\u201d military actions using nuclear warheads are now described as acts of \u201cself-defense\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The casualties from the direct effects of blast, radioactivity, and fires resulting from the massive use of nuclear weapons by the superpowers [of the Cold War era] would be so catastrophic that we avoided such a tragedy for the first four decades after the invention of nuclear weapons.1<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/hiroshima_atomic_bomb.jpg\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7677\" title=\"hiroshima_atomic_bomb\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/hiroshima_atomic_bomb.jpg?resize=490%2C339\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"339\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">During the Cold War, the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) prevailed, namely that the use of nuclear weapons against the Soviet Union would result in \u201cthe destruction of both the attacker and the defender\u201d. In the post Cold war era, US nuclear doctrine was redefined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The dangers of nuclear weapons have been obfuscated. Tactical weapons have been upheld as distinct, in terms of their impact, from the strategic thermonuclear bombs of the Cold War era. Tactical nuclear weapons are identical to the strategic nuclear bombs. The only things that differentiates these two categories of nuclear bombs are:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">1) their delivery system;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#000000;\"> 2) their explosive yield (measured in mass of trinitrotoluene (TNT), in kilotons or megatons.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/1ec668b943001887ba3721634ec70caa2d6d85ab.jpeg\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7674\" title=\"1ec668b943001887ba3721634ec70caa2d6d85ab\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/1ec668b943001887ba3721634ec70caa2d6d85ab.jpeg?resize=400%2C267\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The tactical nuclear weapon or low yield mini-nuke is described as a small nuclear bomb, delivered in the same way as the earth penetrating bunker buster bombs. Tactical nuclear weapons, in terms of in-theater delivery systems are comparable to the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The Pentagon\u2019s 2001 Nuclear Posture Review envisaged so-called \u201ccontingency plans\u201d for an offensive \u201cfirst strike use\u201d of nuclear weapons, not only against \u201caxis of evil\u201d countries (including Iran and North Korea) but also against Russia and China.2<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The adoption of the NPR by the US Congress in late 2002 provided a green light for carrying out the Pentagon\u2019s pre-emptive nuclear war doctrine, both in terms of military planning as well as defense procurement and production. Congress not only rolled back its prohibition on low yield nuclear weapons, it also provided funding \u201cto pursue work on so-called mini-nukes\u201d. The financing was allocated to bunker buster (earth penetrator) tactical nuclear weapons as well as to the development of new nuclear weapons.3<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/ng15.jpg\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7678\" title=\"NG15\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/ng15.jpg?resize=490%2C372\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"372\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Hiroshima Day 2003: Secret Meeting at Strategic Command Headquarters<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">On August 6, 2003, on Hiroshima Day, commemorating when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima (August 6 1945), a secret meeting was held behind closed doors at Strategic Command Headquarters at the Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Senior executives from the nuclear industry and the military industrial complex were in attendance. This mingling of defense contractors, scientists and policy-makers was not intended to commemorate Hiroshima. The meeting was intended to set the stage for the development of a new generation of \u201csmaller\u201d, \u201csafer\u201d and \u201cmore usable\u201d nuclear weapons, to be used in the \u201cin-theater nuclear wars\u201d of the 21st Century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/giappone_-_bombe.jpg\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7673\" title=\"GIAPPONE_-_Bombe\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/giappone_-_bombe.jpg?resize=400%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In a cruel irony, the participants to this secret meeting, which excluded members of Congress, arrived on the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing and departed on the anniversary of the attack on Nagasaki. More than 150 military contractors, scientists from the weapons labs, and other government officials gathered at the headquarters of the US Strategic Command in Omaha, Nebraska to plot and plan for the possibility of \u201cfull-scale nuclear war\u201d, calling for the production of a new generation of nuclear weapons \u2013 more \u201cusable\u201d so-called \u201cmini-nukes\u201d and earth penetrating \u201cbunker busters\u201d armed with atomic warheads.4<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">According to a leaked draft of the agenda, the secret meeting included discussions on \u201cmini-nukes\u201d and \u201cbunker-buster\u201d bombs with nuclear war heads \u201cfor possible use against rogue states\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">We need to change our nuclear strategy from the Cold War to one that can deal with emerging threats&#8230; The meeting will give some thought to how we guarantee the efficacy of the (nuclear) stockpile.5<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/hiroshima.jpeg\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7676\" title=\"hiroshima\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/hiroshima.jpeg?resize=400%2C369\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"369\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>The Privatization of Nuclear War: US Military Contractors Set the Stage <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The post 9\/11 nuclear weapons doctrine was in the making, with America\u2019s major defense contractors directly involved in the decision-making process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The Hiroshima Day 2003 meetings had set the stage for the \u201cprivatization of nuclear war\u201d. Corporations not only reap multibillion-dollar profits from the production of nuclear bombs, they also have a direct voice in setting the agenda regarding the use and deployment of nuclear weapons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/skulls.gif\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7675\" title=\"Skulls\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redphoenixnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/skulls.gif?resize=482%2C327\" alt=\"\" width=\"482\" height=\"327\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The nuclear weapons industry, which includes the production of nuclear devices as well as the missile delivery systems, etc., is controlled by a handful of defense contractors with Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Northrop Grunman, Raytheon and Boeing in the lead.
