The brutal killing of Abderrahim Fakir, which occurred during a police operation with methods similar to those perpetrated by Trump’s ICE militia, has elicited indignation among workers and democratic and anti-fascist forces throughout Italy.
Fakir’s death takes place within a context characterized by militaristic racist policies, suppression of democratic freedoms, violence against migrants and striking workers, beatings of protesters, and virtual legal immunity for those guilty of these attacks.
Right-wing forces and the fascists are trying to outmaneuver each other on the so-called security plan, calling for a type of “self service” justice. They are shamelessly asking for immunity for those who use firearms outside of legitimate defense. They want to drag the country into the abyss of racism and fascism: they are leading Italy to war and ruin.
Since the story broke, protests and strikes, in Bologna and many other cities, have ensued, to demand justice and punishment for those who killed a person who was simply in need of help, as Fakir was asking for.
At Monday night’s protest in Bologna, in which we (translator’s note: “we,” being the Organization for the communist party of the proletariat) took part, a jam-packed Neptune Square with more than 5000 protesters of all ages, with especially the youth, women, and the elderly, engulfed the crowd with the cry of “murderers!”
Fakir’s murder is not, unfortunately, an isolated incident. Other cases live on: those of Giuliani, Aldrovandi, Cucchi, Uva, Bianzino, Eliantonio, Lonzi, Aprile Gatti, El Abouby, and those of all the other people killed, tortured, and tormented by bourgeois repression.
Every day, awareness is growing that the repressive and “security”-based plan is of international significance, passing
through its oppression and imperialist aggression to the peoples: Palestine, Iran, Lebanon, Venezuela, Cuba… including rearmament, increased military spending, and rolling back of social spending for healthcare, retirement, and education.
The need to unite in a broad popular democratic front which is anti-fascist and anti-imperialist is being ever-more a requirement to halt the threats of war and fascism.
We denounce the oppressive character of the bourgeois state that defends the interests of a minority of exploiters!
May solidarity among workers and the people be strengthened against the repression and impunity of the police forces!
Let us unite and mobilize in defense of the interests, rights, and freedoms won by the blood of the workers!
Out with the government of rearmament, repression and shame!
